Transition to turbulence in quasi-two-dimensional MHD flow driven by lateral walls

چکیده

We investigate MHD-Couette--Shercliff flows driven by lateral wall motion with turbulent transitions observed only at supercritical Re. Linearly, the Tollmien--Schlichting (TS) wave instability was isolated each for friction parameter H $\ensuremath{\gtrsim}$ 300 in MHD-Couette flow, and 1000 Shercliff flow. At low H, linear nonlinear growth led to saturation a traveling wave, where waves conjoin. For larger H\ensuremath{\ge}10, nonlinearity isolates TS one wall. H=10 turbulence is sustained distinct inertial subrange formed. H\ensuremath{\ge}30 state relaminarized, bulk production due flattened base

Shell model for quasi-two-dimensional turbulence.

We discuss the possibility to introduce geometrical constraints in shell models of turbulence in order to mimic the turbulent dynamics that takes place in fluid layers with large aspect ratio. By using a scale-dependent set of coupling parameters, we are able to resolve both scales larger and smaller than a geometrical dimension of the flow. The proposed model is able to resolve with high accur...

Elastic waves and transition to elastic turbulence in a two-dimensional viscoelastic Kolmogorov flow.

We investigate the dynamics of the two-dimensional periodic Kolmogorov flow of a viscoelastic fluid, described by the Oldroyd-B model, by means of direct numerical simulations. Above a critical Weissenberg number the flow displays a transition from stationary to randomly fluctuating states, via periodic ones. The increasing complexity of the flow in both time and space at progressively higher v...

Transition from weak to strong cascade in MHD turbulence.

The transition from weak to strong turbulence when passing from large to small scales in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence with guide field is a cornerstone of anisotropic turbulence theory. We present the first check of this transition, using the Shell-RMHD, which combines a shell model of perpendicular nonlinear coupling and linear propagation along the guide field. This model allows us to...

Transition to turbulence in particulate pipe flow.

We investigate experimentally the influence of suspended particles on the transition to turbulence. The particles are monodisperse and neutrally buoyant with the liquid. The role of the particles on the transition depends upon both the pipe to particle diameter ratios and the concentration. For large pipe-to-particle diameter ratios the transition is delayed while it is lowered for small ratios...

End-wall effects in granular tumblers: From quasi-two-dimensional flow to three-dimensional flow.

The flow of granular material in rotating tumblers is confined to a thin flowing layer at the free surface in which the particle velocity is primarily streamwise, perpendicular to the axis of rotation, with minimal axial motion. Particle tracking velocimetry was used to measure the surface velocity for 1 and 2 mm glass particles and sand in cylindrical tumblers of various diameters, lengths, an...
